The cabinet rattled with wooden rhythm while, beyond the open window, a silent midday glare flattened the courtyard stones.

Helena balanced on the loom bench, surrounded by an accumulation of punch cards, spare shuttles, chalked bobbins, and a canvas suitcase of tools. Paper flakes drifted each time she shuffled a card, mingling with oil scent and the distant murmur of pigeons. The cloth already stretched heavy on the front beam, its pattern halfway complete yet still unreadable from this angle. She tapped a pencil against the blueprint pinned beside her, the tip resting beneath a dark curve shaped like an ibis wing.

She fed the next card into the chain; hooks tested paper, some slipping cleanly through holes, others knocking softly against unpunched squares. The loom answered with its usual click, yet a faint scrape followed, unfamiliar, as though one card sat crooked against its neighbor. Helena slid down, opened a drawer, and withdrew another card, hoping to persuade the mechanism with fresh stock. Before inserting it, she held the suspected troublemaker against the window; sunlight glittered through rows of holes except for one misplaced dot left solid. The flaw looked minor, yet on the blueprint that dot formed the ibis’s eye, and any blur would haunt the cloth. She added the new card anyway, letting the chain lengthen another link.

The loom advanced, produced a stripe, then stalled; the shuttle waited mid-shed, thread loose, as if listening. Helena rested her palms on the warm wood, breath catching with the vibration, and finally stopped the treadles. Footsteps crossed the doorway; an acquaintance, Nadine, paused, lifted an eyebrow, and whispered, “Stuck?” Helena only nodded, lifted the faulty card from the chain, and placed it atop the suitcase beside a coil of crimson weft. Without that rectangle, the chain thinned; hooks rose cleanly and produced a near-musical tap. Nadine shrugged, drifted away, leaving air that now carried the card’s papery scent more distinctly than before.

With the gap now open, Helena pressed the treadles again; the hooks aligned cleanly, the shed widened, and the shuttle darted through. Row after row settled, and the ibis figure sharpened, though a faint shadow where earlier yarns mingled still lingered inside the pattern. She wound the finished rows onto the beam, folded the faulty card, and slid it into her pocket instead of the waste bin. Outside, the silent glare softened; inside, the cabinet kept breathing rhythm, measuring whether the missing rectangle would leave silence or echo in tomorrow’s weave.

她把下一張卡片送入鏈條；金屬鉤測試紙面，一些順利穿洞，另一些輕觸實紙。織機照常喀噠一聲，卻跟著傳來陌生的輕擦，好像有張卡歪向鄰卡。海蓮娜跳下座板，拉開抽屜取出新卡，希望用新紙片說服機件而非用力硬推。插入前，她把可疑卡片舉向窗光；排排孔洞閃亮，只有一點原紙留實。缺口雖小，藍圖上那點卻是朱鷺的眼，任何模糊都會在布面回響。她仍把新卡接上，使卡鏈再長一節。

織機前進，織出一道紋路後停住；梭子停在經紗間，線鬆垂，像在傾聽。海蓮娜把掌心貼在溫暖木框，感受震動後終於踩停踏板。腳步聲經過門口；熟人娜汀挑眉停下，低聲問：「卡住了？」海蓮娜只是點頭，取下故障卡片，放到手提箱旁紅色緯線卷上。少了那片矩形，鏈條變薄；鉤子乾淨上升，敲出近乎樂音的輕響。娜汀聳肩離開，空氣因此更明顯帶著紙片氣味。

空隙打開後，海蓮娜再次踩踏；鉤子對齊，經紗洞口變寬，梭子俐落穿梭。一行行布面緊壓，朱鷺輪廓更清晰，只是先前錯線留下的淡影仍在圖案深處。她把新織好的行數捲到梁上，折起故障卡片，塞進口袋而非丟進廢紙箱。外頭的靜光變柔；室內木櫃持續呼吸般的節奏，測量那片缺席矩形究竟會留下靜默，還是於明日織幅中回響。
