No breeze stirred the curtained window, and the quiet held while Fraser sketched the pebble resting in the tray beneath the brass-rimmed lens. Wood polish mingled with a faint must that clung to the stone, a damp scent not yet strong enough to crowd the brighter notes of paper chalk. He lowered the glass by scarcely a centimetre; inside the sharpened circle, quartz crystals glittered, and a spiral traced across the surface like fossilized remains pressed into grey sand. The smell of iron from the magnifier’s hinge reached him each time the arm clicked forward. His hand moved, paused, moved again, as if the object offered fleeting details that blossomed then slipped back into blur.
A sudden knock rattled the front door; its hollow thud belonged to neither of them. Fraser set the pencil down without finishing the curve, the line still wet with graphite shine. In the hallway, Petra’s steps crossed the floorboards, and she called, “It’s for you.” He met her by the coat stand where a parcel waited, edges dented, paper smelling of rain caught somewhere between towns. Signing took moments; carrying the box upstairs took longer because the cardboard sagged, releasing a puff of dust that tasted of old lofts and distant memory. When the package finally rested on the nearest shelf, he noticed the kettle clicking off in the kitchen, steam drifting like pale fabric before vanishing.
Returning to the desk, he stopped short. Sunlight had shifted across the room while he was gone; it struck the tray from a lower angle, and the pebble’s crystals flared with tiny rainbow shards. The warmed air carried resin from the window frame, overlaying the earlier must. Beneath the lens the same spiral now cut deeper than he had thought, tiny caverns opening where darker grains hinted at buried secrets locked inside the stone. He lifted the glass, then lowered it again, watching the focus snap tight: each ridge suggested forgotten treasure compressed into rock long before anyone scribbled maps. His fingers hovered, unsure whether to shade the new shadow or chase the older line; graphite dust clung to his thumb while he hesitated.
Petra stood beside him without speaking, her sleeve brushing his. Together they watched the colours rise and fade as a slow cloud slid across the sun. Fraser breathed through his nose, tasting the changed air, then slid the sketchbook closer, page whispering open. The pencil tip greeted the paper, but the angle of his wrist held, suspended above the margin, the lead still uncommitted.
Translation
