Moisture from the airborne spray had beaded on their surfaces, drawing adjacent greens and blues to coalesce into a half-liquid mosaic. The paw imprint, however, no longer resembled an animal’s step; with the seed sunk at its centre, it read like a compass rose. She paused; her thumb rubbed the cool glass twice, then hovered over the altered mark. Instead of resuming the neat lines, she dragged one wet shard across another, testing how the colours merged under the wetter light. Exhilaration skimmed along the breeze and raised goosebumps on her forearm, a lively chill born purely of salt and sun.

Kaya laid the last glass fragment flat upon the cloth and let her hands fall together in her lap. She waited without moving, and the paw-shaped compass slowly filled as faint currents pushed fresh brine over its ridges. A translucent dome formed where two ripples met, catching sunlight like blown glass before thinning into nothing. Gull cries peeled away down the coast, yet the pool replied only with quiet clicks from a crab hidden under rock.
