English Original
Zander balanced a pale basalt slab between his palms and slid it toward the narrow breach, grains of sand squeaking under the weight. An oystercatcher burst from behind the wall, its orange bill flicking droplets as it dashed through the draining channel. The air carried damp algae and a faint char that did not belong to the shore. He paused, watching the bird settle on the outer rim and face the retreating water. Three smaller shapes formed a huddle at its feet, nearly blending with the mottled stones until they blinked. A thin pale line of foam crawled lower, leaving empty shells glaring like scattered teeth. He leaned closer, testing the gap with his knuckles — the replacement stone still hovered between staying and slipping.
A sudden gust pushed a hotter scent across the flat, darker than seaweed, almost metallic. Behind him, up the short slope where their gear rested, a ribbon of grey smoke twisted beside the camping toaster they had used for early bread. From beyond the gear, Juliet's voice clipped the breeze with a sharp warning, the single word 'Smoke' cracking like a pebble on glass. Zander set the slab down and trotted over wet sand that mirrored the sky. The coil inside the little box glowed dull red; a forgotten crust blackened above it. He unplugged the battery lead, tipped the charred slice into a tide pool, and waited while the smell thinned into the open air. Drips tapped from the toaster’s base, striking a crab-sized indentation with tiny pops, before silence returned.
When he returned to the curve, the wall before him wore a different light. The sun had swung enough to allude to evening, colouring each cobble with fire while the channels of water had thinned to silver threads. The slab he had abandoned now leaned against an older stone, its edge darker where moisture had crept upward. The oystercatcher still stood, yet no longer alone; one chick ventured from the inner curve, prodding the sand where his hands had just been. The earlier commotion gained new sense: the adult had been guarding, not fleeing after all. Zander lifted the slab again, rotated it, and listened for the gritty click that signalled acceptance. A quiet tenet of dry-stacking whispered through muscle memory, reminding him that weight finds balance. For now, obligation rested with gravity and tide, settling around the stones rather than upon his shoulders. He eased his hand away from the cobble, the rising water already folding around its base.
Translation
