English Original
Bea pressed her index finger to the cabin window, anticipating a chill, yet the pane radiated stored heat from the hidden radiator below. At that moment a dusky moth settled on the reading lamp’s rim, quivering as the click-click pulse under the floor kept time for its wings. The insect rested inside the lamp’s circle like a scrap of velvet, and the curtain beside it swayed to reveal and conceal the tiny silhouette in alternating beats. She drew back slightly, palm still on the warm glass, watching how each sway shifted light across the insect’s body and brightened a pattern she first mistook for dust. The wheels hammered a faster rhythm through the mattress, and the unexpected warmth under her fingertip contradicted the wind-washed cold she had watched licking the fields moments earlier.
Back home her grandmother, a steady weaver, had taught Bea to judge yarn by stretching thumb and little finger; that remembered span always landed cleanly on the thread. She raised the same measure beside the lamp; the moth’s wings covered less than two knuckles, and her shoulders tightened at their smallness after the bold way it seized the light. A tunnel swallowed the train, the cabin lurched, and the insect slipped from the rim, touching down on the quivering surface of her water glass instead of the shade. Rather than sinking, it rode the meniscus, each tremor making new rings that cradled the body and sent pale reflections skating across the ceiling. Bea hovered a finger above the rim then withdrew, waiting through three sets of clicks until her own breathing matched them and her hand settled, shelving intervention in favor of quiet retreat.
The tunnel walls fell away behind, night returned, and Bea tipped the table a fraction; ripples broke, the moth rose in a slow, uncertain spiral. It landed against the window, and now the pattern on its folded wings formed a neat chevron design matching the blanket stripes, though reversed as if printed from the far side of morning. “You’re fine there,” she breathed, not aiming the words at the sleeper above but at the tiny voyager stilling itself against the pane. The creature’s antennae tested the glass once, then it halted, choosing retreat beneath the curtain’s darker hem. Outside, the rails straightened; the rhythmic click-click slowed, and the interior window cooled to a gentle mist that touched her forehead when she leaned in beside the resting moth.
Translation
