Inside the cotton candy cart, the drum's steady hum folded around Kellan's wrists, warm and metallic. Beyond the striped awning, organ pipes blared a jaunty tune over the mild evening chatter. He rotated the paper cone in slow arcs, chasing perfect rings the way his hands had memorised all season. Sugar threads gathered obediently, soft as breath, and the forming cloud looked as symmetrical as a compass drawing. Somewhere among the voices, a gull laughed, yet the hum near his palms never shifted a note. Tonight felt routine enough that he scarcely glanced at the sugar scoop cooling on the rail beside the drum.
A faint pause entered the night when the calliope track hiccupped, and in that pocket Kellan noticed what else stayed silent. On most evenings a waxwing perched on the lamp above the cart, piping short trills that braided with the motor’s pitch. The lamp stood empty now, its glass reflecting drifting bulbs, and the drum’s hum sounded suddenly larger, almost asymmetrical, wobbling against the bright melody outside. His left hand slowed, causing the cloud to slump on one side while fresh sugar hissed against the wall. He straightened the cone, but a breeze curled through the lane and peeled wisps away before they could land.
Footsteps approached; Nessa returned carrying two small cups the barista down the lane had just filled, the aroma of roasted beans threading through the sugar fog. She rested one cup on the counter and held the other near her cheek, steam making the bulbs above shimmer. "Busy?" The word drifted between them, soft, and his answer arrived only as a half nod. He tapped the cone’s rim to dislodge a hanging clump, yet the sugar clung stubbornly, stretching into a glistening ribbon that fluttered like a loose thread on fabric. Nessa’s sleeve brushed his elbow, steadying his wrist before the ribbon snapped and drifted off toward the gravel. Neither of them tried to intervene further; organ music rolled onward, indifferent, while the cone now bulged unevenly.
Kellan lifted the finished cloud and studied its skewed silhouette, tufts leaning like windblown grass instead of the tidy sphere he once expected. He started a new cone, this time tilting the paper from the first rotation, letting the threads settle where they wished. The cloudy mass rose in a gentle spiral, asymmetrical yet strangely balanced, and he passed it to Nessa without comment. She accepted it, lifted her barista cup in salute, and the two sounds—the soft creak of paper and the faint clink of lid—met between them. When the speaker looped back to its opening phrase, the drum kept humming at the same pitch, a thin note lingering against his inner ear.
