Each time Zev leaned forward, the soles of his water shoes pressed new hollows into the sand, and coarse grains squeezed upward through the mesh. To his left, a parrotfish drifted close, jaw working, but the usual crunch had not sounded. The stillness felt unfinished, like a measure waiting for its downbeat.

A minute stretched, and two independent clocks appeared. The first ticked through shallow pulses that nudged Zev’s calves—five gentle laps, then a pause. The second belonged to the unseen parrotfish; exactly each quarter interval, the crunch finally arrived, scattering a scrap of white dust that curled downward. Zev lowered a glass-bottom viewer, head bent, spine balanced, watching the two rhythms overlap and separate. Every alternate pulse caught the dust and swirled it; every alternate crunch rebuilt the little cloud. He began to track the pattern, yet a loose fragment rolled under his arch, snagging the edge of his shoe and sending a brief lurch through his center before he steadied again.

A shadow moved beside him. Kent waded in, lifting the bamboo stick Zev had left on the shore. “Thought you’d want this,” Kent said, voice level, water rippling around his calves. Zev accepted it, inhaled, and tapped the stick’s tip above a branching coral, careful not to touch. His stance shifted wider for balance, but the viewer’s rim dipped, threatening to flood. Kent’s free hand caught the frame without comment, holding it level while Zev realigned his shoulders. The two bodies formed another rhythm now: Zev’s measured taps, Kent’s silent corrections, pulse-crunch continuing below.

A heron launched from the reef crest; its sudden wing beat pushed a single wavelet that met a crunch at the precise moment Zev tapped. Breath stopped. Knees, wrists, and the thin muscles along Zev’s spine locked into the converged cadence before thought regained footing. He tilted the stick a quarter turn, marking where dust met ripple, and only then noticed a fresh groove running along the bamboo—darker, water-logged, a narrow wrinkle that hadn’t existed when the stick first stayed behind on the sand.
