The measuring tape lay curled inside out at the trench’s rim, its brass hook flashing while its numbers hid against the steel. Alongside, a faint scratch sliced the compacted clay wall, so thin it caught light only when Yara shifted her shadow. She knelt, the grid strings trembling as her knee brushed a loosened peg. Warm afternoon air tasted of iron, and a grain of soil reached her tongue when she licked a lip. Quinn, brushing the adjacent square, tapped the bamboo stick twice but stayed silent.
Yara angled the trowel, ready to sculpt the surface, and chalky dust slipped onto her tongue, tasting like stale biscuit crumbs. A tiny xerophyte gripped the trench edge, its salty leaves brushing her wrist when she leaned forward. Its stubborn flourish matched the firm rhythm of her wrist, so she slid the blade faster, widening the arc of exposed clay. Quinn offered a brush; she shook her head, bent closer, and let immersion drown every other sound. The rim’s thickness, however, grew strangely uneven, and a dull ridge interrupted its curve.
She paused, tongue brushing her palate while the dust left a sharper bitterness than before. The ridge refused the symmetry of a cooking bowl; it narrowed inward, more like the shoulder of a pouring vessel. Accepting Quinn’s silent offer, she swapped trowel for brush and skimmed the line with feathery strokes. Soil peeled away like thin chocolate, and a puncture near the narrowing released a sudden, oily aftertaste she recognised from spent lamps. Her shoulders dropped; the object no longer told a kitchen story but something half-lit and unknown. She turned the clipboard sideways to catalog the find in a new square, aware the inverted tape had shuffled her numbers.
Yara lifted the now-loose sherd, balanced it on a palm, and felt its weight contradict the fragile curve, a faint earthy bitterness brushing her tongue as dust drifted down. She could not name it anymore, so she settled it on a clay plinth she had shaped beside the peg mound. A breeze crossed the field, carrying fine dust that tasted of salt; grains settled onto the sherd’s rim, soft as breadcrumbs. She kept her hands still, letting the dust claim the surface without quiet protest. Yara rested the lamp-shaped sherd on the clay ledge as the first shadow of evening slid across its sand-speckled lip.
Translation
