English Original

Flora stepped over the low wooden rail onto the taiko stage, her soles meeting the sun-warmed planks with a soft hush. A twist of juniper needles, brittle and deep green, rested squarely in the centre of the largest drumhead as though someone had left a tiny offering. Beyond it, smaller drums waited in tilted cradles, their cowhide heads warm under the lamps, and a faint resin scent lifted from the polished bachi on their rack. Jarvis climbed the steps after her, rolling his wrists as though reawakening them, then paused when the green speck on the creamy hide caught his eye. Cool evening air drifted through the open sides, brushing their shoulders while the floodlights kept the drumheads flushed with gentle heat.

Jarvis lifted two bachi, offered one; Flora accepted, noticing a dark ring where sweat had already darkened the handle. They stood feet apart, pulses aligning with the stillness, until a finch swept past the canopy, its shadow skating over the pale hide. Flora tapped the centre first; a rounded thump rose through the platform and settled in her ribs like damp heat caught beneath cloth. Near the rim the rebound came back harsher, snapping her wrist, so she paused, shifted, and reset her stance. The juniper fragment slid a few centimetres from the vibration, leaving a faint sticky trace, a mere tidbit that glistened against the hide.

Outside, sunlight touched the canopy edge, stirring the leaves whose quiet photosynthesis continued while the stage soaked up rising warmth. Jarvis gave a low whistle, the note barely louder than the drum’s fading hum, eyes fixed on the needles’ slow crawl. She nudged the needles with her bachi, then hesitated as a pale outline, shaped like a tiny salamander, emerged where the resin had lifted the surface dust. Flora hovered, bachi balanced above the mark, a bead of sweat cooling on her wrist while she weighed another strike. She stepped back instead, allowing the head to breathe, and for a heartbeat the platform held a silence as crisp as frost.

Then she placed the juniper trace exactly over the salamander’s spine, lifted the bachi high, and let gravity finish the gesture. The note bloomed brighter, arching through the rafters while a cool draft slipped beneath the canopy, trading warmth for a shiver along their arms. A woodland scent burst from the cracked needles, resin meeting heat, and both players stilled, noses catching the surprise inside the sound. Flora loosened her fingers, letting the fragment lift on the drum’s rebound; it rose, turned once in the amber light, and glided toward the stage edge. The spinning needles rode the warm updraft, still drifting above the open night air.

Translation
