English Original
Ulric pushed the wire gate open and stepped onto the gravel path that cut the hillside clearing.
Just inside the cedar-panelled hut doorway, a dark crescent of moisture stained the floorboards, spreading like a quiet question.
He paused, measuring the stain’s span against the planks, while overhead the roof projection appeared perfectly intact.
Ahead, Bea balanced near the Stevenson screen, her notebook resting on the sill as she waited for the anemometer counter to settle.
The interior appeared taller than usual; ceiling panels rose into shadow, and daylight slipped between them in thin ribs.
Behind them, the hillside opened toward the valley, yet the hut held a compressed hush.
Bea flicked a torch across the thermometer’s glass; its rosewood handle gleamed where varnish had thinned along her grip.
The beam caught the mercury thread, and the quick burst of silver inspired Ulric to copy the reading into today’s grid.
Outside, a gust accelerated the aluminium cups, and Bea released an exhilarated whoop that scattered a thrush from the windowsill.
Her elbow brushed the logbook, nudging a pencil that rolled, struck the drum housing, and rattled down between floorboards.
The pencil vanished, yet its brief clap against the drum jarred the pen, smearing the barometric trace for the last hour.
Ulric crouched, listening to the smear dry, and glanced again at the damp crescent by the door.
He lifted the spare stool to reach the roof join, hoping a missing shingle explained the moisture on the boards.
The stool’s legs wedged in the narrow aisle, sealing Bea behind the drum just as she lifted its casing.
She tapped twice on the aluminium skin, a metallic request that needed no wording.
Ulric slid sideways, yet the shift tilted the stool, and its edge pressed against the logbook, bending the stained page.
Problem traded with problem; the roof remained unseen, while the afternoon record threatened to transform into a blurred memory.
He set the stool down, deciding the stain deserved investigation before any climb that endangered every other task.
Bea knelt beside the doorway, pressed a cloth into the crescent, and paused when the fibers lifted almost clean.
She traced the arc with a fingertip, then lifted her flask; condensation ringed its rosewood cap in the same broad curve.
A soft chuckle escaped Ulric, and the stool returned to its corner while smudged ink settled into a lighter shade.
They left the damp outline untouched, its curved edge darkening again as fresh droplets slipped from the flask.
Daylight had shifted; long bars of gold now crossed the screen, and the thermometer stood half in shadow.
Ulric tilted the torch across the mercury column.
