Story Content
English Original
Harriet lifted the mallet again, forearms already taut from steady work, and sent a clipped tap along the scored channel. Maren, standing a pace back, lifted a brow yet kept arms folded, the scored lines deep enough to follow without further comment. Ice flakes burst outward, drifting past a vacant notch where a second chisel usually rested yet lay missing, the gap drawing her eye. Sunlight entered the block through a polished face and stretched across the courtyard floor, a narrow beam marking slow afternoon progress like a silent clock hand. She shifted weight onto her left heel, bracing against the platform’s slight wobble while the crow on the wall hopped closer to the scatter below. The space beside her felt wider by that absent tool, yet she kept the rhythm—tap, breathe, tap—letting the wood handle warm in her glove.
Mid-swing, her wrist recalled another task entirely—the slow folding of bread dough at home—and the motion slipped into the cut before she noticed the borrowing. The chisel eased instead of biting, carving a broad curve that ignored the guide line and left a clear pane gleaming like still water. For a breath she hovered, weight pitched forward, entranced as the new surface caught light and transformed the single beam into three pale spears. The courtyard brightened, then dimmed, snapping her reverie when the crow startled and flapped away, its wings scattering snow from the wall. She stepped back, shoulders drawing inward, and examined the unintended sweep that now marked the block like handwriting she could not quite recognise.
A faint fissure inside the curved pane deepened under its own weight, and a fist-sized shard slipped free, skittering to the flagstones with a crystalline chime. Air slid through the gap, vapor curling over her boots, and inside the cavity a small leaf, trapped since the lake froze, glowed amber against blue ice. Sunlight refracted through the hollow, throwing warm colour bands across the snow where only pale glare had fallen moments earlier. "Look at that," Maren murmured from behind the platform. She crouched, palm settling on the platform to steady balance, yet the missing chisel stayed on her mind, as though it knew this leaf awaited exposure. Nothing moved except the slow drip collecting beneath the block, each drop landing precisely where the absent tool ought to hang.
She considered removing the leaf, yet the block already carried strain, and any extra force might fracture the newly opened window. Instead, she adjusted stance, knees bent, letting weight center, while afternoon light continued to transform against facets that owed their accidental virtue to a baker’s memory. Beside her, the single mallet rested where two once lay; the gap remained deliberate and unfilled. A fresh rainbow slid across the stones, pausing at the toe of her boot, as if uncertain where to settle. Her gloved fingertip hovered a hair above the glowing hollow, the rest of her body held still on the brink of another strike.
Translation
