English Original
"Hold the tin steady."
Yves pressed both palms against the warm metal rim of the bait tin. Around him the harbor hummed with gentle knocks—water tapping hulls and gulls slicing between masts. Each evening he and Zeke packed bait for the night boats, a routine traced into muscle. The round container rested on a crate, its unique green paint speckled by spots of rust. Late sunlight lay across the dock, and the metal trapped warmth, sending thin shimmers above fish brine. Zeke dipped a flat iron scoop, the only implement required, and folded sardine pieces into the tin. They pressed the hinge once, expecting the usual firm fit from the seasoned metal.
Cooler air drifted in as nightfall crept over water beyond the pier mouth. The hot lid contracted against the sudden chill, and faint steam stroked Yves’s knuckles. Metal with little tolerance for swift change issued a sharp groan then sprang upward. Salty drops arced, peppering their sleeves and the dark planks underfoot. Yves jerked back at the pop that echoed between quiet boats. Zeke caught the flying lid before it clattered, slid it back, and wiped brine away. They swapped places, and Yves pressed again, easing pressure until the hinge settled without protest.
Their breath now mingled with the lingering vapor that rose from the bait. They resumed filling crates, hands moving slower in the cooling dock air. A narrow band of moonlight slipped between masts and silvered the wet rim around the tin. Yves nudged the closed tin beside Zeke’s crate, and their damp fingerprints shone on its surface. Zeke tapped the lid once, and the twin prints stayed there, catching weak moonlight between ropes.
Translation
