English Original
A thin blue stripe flashed across the stacked tins on the highest shelf.
"Where did that light come from?" Zelma asked the quiet storeroom.
She had carried in a crystal chandelier.
It was a luxury piece won at last week’s auction.
The storeroom’s single bulb hung loose near a narrow window and barely reached the floor.
Zelma hooked the chandelier to a spare bracket and fetched a fresh bulb from a box.
She wanted the glass drops to scatter color across the dim aisles.
Dust floated in the pale beam.
The scent of old cardboard mixed with a faint electrical buzz.
Zelma unscrewed the weak bulb and slipped the new one into the socket.
When she twisted the switch, a tiny spark jumped inside the glass.
Sharp glare bounced off a metal paint can, then ricocheted toward the chandelier.
Each cut crystal refracted the light, painting shifting bands on boxes and the concrete floor.
A mirror stored against the far wall grabbed one band.
It threw it back as a wobbling silhouette.
Zelma inspired sharply, dust scratching her throat, and stepped closer to the sudden rainbow.
The returning ray landed on a small tin trunk half hidden behind canvas rolls.
It revealed a delicate keyhole.
"I never noticed that before," she said, tracing the bright outline with her finger.
At that moment the new bulb fizzed and went dark; color drained from the crystals.
Zelma lowered her hand and laughed once, soft and surprised.
Sunlight slipped behind the brick wall outside.
Deep shadow flooded the room, burying the rainbow stain in plain gray.
Translation
Zelma
Zelma
Zelma
