Owen bent his knees, swung the metal pail forward, and grain rattled onto the straw-covered floor. The pair visited the henhouse every dawn, each eager to take part in the familiar chore. Feathered bodies fluttered from perch to ground, claws scratching while grain and pale dust began to mingle. A faint sweet smell of dry corn mixed with the cooler scent of damp wood, and thin bars of sunlight crossed the slats. Outside the wire fence, a small wooden pavilion waited beyond a patch of grass that rain had encouraged into tall, soft blades.

Today a swollen floorboard near the nesting boxes tilted the ground by a finger’s width. Neither boy noticed at first. When Owen set his canvas backpack beside the boxes, an egg rolled from a higher slot, gained momentum on the slight slope, and tapped against the pack’s side. The board creaked again; a second egg followed, gliding like a slow marble. Declan lunged, but the shell slipped through his fingers and spun under the perch bar. The hens clucked yet carried on pecking, wings flicking straw into low arcs.

Owen shifted his boots, wedged a spare shingle under the loose plank, and the tilt eased. Grain still slid, but the eggs stayed put. Straw clung to his sleeves, and a thin streak of yolk shone on the floor where the first egg had cracked. The boys stepped back as the birds settled on their perches once more. Feathers drifted downward, then hung in quiet air.
