English Original
Joel stepped down from the sun-warmed sandstone shelf onto the lower, damp ledge that cupped a single tide pool.
The glass carafe resting beneath the surface caught his eye at once, its neck tilted like a green question mark, barnacles spotting the shoulder. A shard of red shell drifted up, spinning like a butterfly in slow air, then dropped again. "Look at you," he murmured, voice absorbed by rock and water. The pattern on the bottle’s base fanned outward, bright as a folded peacock tail. The pool lay no deeper than a handspan, yet one careless plunge would cloud it; Joel shifted, and a slate-flat rock beside him answered with a hollow tap, wide and smooth as a serving platter abandoned after a picnic.
Three more small signals followed: a bubble thread rose from the bottle’s mouth, a pale eelgrass blade brushed its lip, and passing shade dimmed the pool. The accumulation drew Joel lower; his hand hovered, then retreated, fingers dripping. In the duller light he noticed a thin, silvery sheet suspended halfway up the neck. The earlier sparkle had disguised it. As the last bubble touched that layer, the sheet flexed and parted, revealing a lattice of tiny eggs glued to the glass. The carafe had become a quiet nursery rather than litter.
Joel exhaled through his nose, the breath barely troubling the water. Lifting the bottle might peel the eggs away or leave them for gulls. Instead he considered the platter-like stone; angled just so, it could cast shade until the tide returned. A gull cried across the inlet, and sunlight brightened the pool again. Joel slid the rock a finger’s breadth, grains squeaking under its weight. His wrist now hangs above the stone’s rim, skin cooled by reflected light, waiting for the tiniest tilt.
Translation
