A dull hum rolled along the ceramic counter and settled inside a silver mixing bowl. Rafael leaned over the bowl, drumming the rim with a wooden spoon until the metal answered with a bright ring. Warm steam from a nearby saucepan brushed his cheeks while he listened for every small vibration. Olyvia stood near the window and rubbed a wet finger around a thin glass, chasing pitch. Their sounds braided across glazed tiles, turning the air into a brief personal orchestra. Aunt Zola dried plates near the stove, her steady presence guarding the hot pots and knives.
From her vantage beside the sink, Olyvia caught a faint rattle inside the nearby spice drawer. The drawer wood vibrated because both tones shared the same narrow path through the countertop. She paused, and the glass note dipped lower, as though the room swallowed it. Rafael tapped the bowl again, looking for a clearer ring against the lingering hum. A sudden burst of sound bounced back, louder now, and shook a small hill of flour. The white grains slipped downward in a soft landslide, pattering like dry rain against the tiles. Olyvia laughed and said, "The bowl sings louder than the radio today," while she wiped the drifting flour. She kept silent about the surprise, deciding to inquire later why the echo grew so strong.
The air settled into mild vibration, like water inside a glass after a pebble drops. Rafael leaned back; the lingering tone seemed ready to wander the kitchen for a lifetime without help. A soft echo slid along the cupboard doors and met a gentle creak from the herb-patch screen. Neither child touched the instruments again; flour still marked their shoes in pale specks. A striped beetle crossed the warm threshold, circled once on the tile, and disappeared under the cupboard.
Translation
