Story Content
English Original
Warm straw scratched along Liora's wrist as she reached into the nearest nesting box.
Collecting fresh eggs with Warren had become routine; their hands already knew each quiet movement.
Thin beams of morning sunlight slipped through the slats, carrying gentle heat across the dusty air.
"The air feels like midsummer inside this little coop," Warren said, brushing straw from his sleeve.
The hens shuffled below, their soft bodies guiding grain dust upward in loose swirling columns.
Each egg settled into the wicker basket, its shell holding a pocket of pleasant warmth.
That sunlight, plain renewable energy, turned the rough pine smell slightly sweeter inside the rising heat.
A faded cloth hung near the perch, kept each spring by tradition for wiping grain dust.
Soon the rising temperature lingered longer than usual and coated the tin water trough with mist.
That mist dripped onto the straw and left dark patches under Liora's knees.
No explanation announced the change; the coop simply breathed this extra heat into every corner.
Warren tilted his head toward the door and spoke softly about the brighter sunlight outside.
Together they shifted deeper inside, sharing a common goal of keeping shells uncracked despite the slick floor.
A lone hen flapped onto the perch; the sudden motion felt like an interview testing their balance.
Heat gathered under the perch, turning the wooden rail slightly tacky where the bird rested.
That tackiness slowed the hen's shuffle, and its claws scratched only short hesitant arcs.
Liora slid one more egg forward, yet its shell surprised her with near-hot smoothness.
She blew across the egg, a small stream of cooling air that left faint condensation rings.
Those rings glimmered beside tiny flecks of grain dust, clear evidence of the morning’s stronger heat.
She lowered the egg into the basket, nested it between straw curls, and brushed warmth from her palm.
Warren lifted the filled basket onto a shelf outside the door; the wicker creaked once and settled.
Translation
