English Original
Three paces separated the open stall door from the packed-earth yard beyond, and Mae stood in that narrow space. A half-full metal flask hung against her hip and clicked each time her boot touched stone. Above her head, bunches of dried herb swung from a beam, leaves brushing one another with a light shush that slipped between the boards.
Mae lifted the flask and let its bottom tap the doorframe. The thin ring echoed against the hollow boards, then faded. Curious, she braved a second tap, this time against the water trough; the note changed, deeper and rounder, and a faint vibration rippled across the surface. "Hear that bell sound?" Fenna asked from the yard, leaning on a rake. Mae grinned and walked to a wooden post, striking once more. The post answered with a dull, regretful thud, as if the old pine swallowed its own voice. Dust sifted down through a shaft of warm light, mixing sun-gold with cool shadows under the rafters.
A goat shifted inside the nearest stall, horns nudging the hanging halter. Leather buckles rattled together, setting off a chain of tiny echoes along the rafters. Surprised by the sudden chorus, a resting hen fluttered upward; wingbeats filled the loft with a soft drum. Straw rustled, then settled. Behind Mae’s elbow, the herb bunches finally stopped their swinging, and the flask in her hand grew quiet. Outside, the yard held still; only one low moo rolled out, long and steady. The sound drifted beyond the fence, over the silent calendar picture of a painted lakeside scene tacked on the wall, and expired in the open air while the beams kept their hush.
