Story Content
English Original
A sharp twang jumped from the bread-box lid when its metal spring leaped loose. Juno jerked her hand back, and the lid slammed against a hanging ladle. The clang echoed around the small kitchen.
The ladle swung forward and clipped a stack of enamel cups. The upper cup spun off, rolled along the tiles, and bumped Juno's shoe. It bounced once, gained speed along the grout line, and skidded toward the pantry door. She crouched, but the coil had already slid beneath the refrigerator. Warm steam drifted past her cheek and carried a faint cinnamon smell. Grey looked over from the counter. "I heard something roll under the stove," he said.
Framed photos of loved ones lined a narrow shelf, and glass panes caught orange light. Juno eased the refrigerator forward enough to fit her arm into the dusty gap. The coil lay beside a lost marble and two crumbs. She pinched it and backed out. Last spring a veterinarian had shown her how every small piece matters when fixing feeders for injured wildlife. She remembered that lesson. A steady hum from the fridge filled the pause. Juno welcomed the tiny resistance of the coil and pressed it back into its groove. Grey steadied the lid, and the bread-box closed with a tidy click. Juno set the loaf inside and slid the box back against the wall.
Translation
