"Tilt the jar a bit."
Barrett slowly worked the warm knife under a small wax cap, lifting the thin lid. Linden’s fingers braced the glass, and a thick ribbon of honey began to drip, swirling lazily as it met the bottom. The sweet smell mixed with a faint hint of beeswax while pale scraps of wax gathered near the frame edge. A single bubble rose, then burst, sending a quiet splash against the inside wall. Light from the window touched amber surfaces, and hushed footsteps outside stayed distant.
Honey usually moved in a steady current, but cooler air seeped across the table and raised the liquid’s viscosity. There was no doubt the slower flow would take longer to fill the waiting jar. Linden shifted weight, then placed a folded towel beneath the jar to lift it higher. The change allowed a gentler pressure at the mouth, yet the stream still lagged. Barrett tipped the frame further, and a sudden pocket opened; honey arced sideways and dotted Linden’s sleeve. The child blinked at the sticky surprise while droplets solidified into tiny domes on the cloth.
Barrett chuckled and pivoted the comb back, letting the flow return to center. Linden held the jar a little closer, watching the level rise until it brushed the rim without overflow. Barrett wiped the knife clean, stacked pale wax shavings into a bowl, and lowered the full frame into its place on the rack. Linden screwed the metal lid onto the jar and set it beside the others.
Translation
