English Original
Two wooden trunks stood an arm-length apart from the ladder’s top rung. A narrow gap between them opened toward a low boundary wall of pale brick.
Lily knelt on the warmer plank near the gap. A rusted tin held thick violet paint beside her left knee, and a glass jar of black ink rested by her right boot. "Look at this color," Lily said, turning the tin. Viscous paint slid inside the rim, its surface bending under slow pressure. She tapped the lid twice; a bubble rode upward, burst, and left a dark spot on the plank. Irving, her quiet partner in this search, brushed dust away with a rolled fuzzy blanket. The blanket’s edge gathered loose grains, then sagged as the paint soaked a corner stitch.
Curiosity kept Lily’s hands moving. She tilted the ink jar next. Heavy ink swirled and pressed against the glass neck, but refused to pour. She shook it once; ink seeped through a tiny crack and traced a thin boundary across the wood. Cooler air pooled near the floor, and the liquid slowed, clinging in a shiny thread. She set the jar down and dragged an old metal spoon from a cardboard box. Its bowl scraped the plank with a dry ring before she scooped at the escaping line. The spoon’s rough edge pushed ink toward the wall, yet most of it slipped under the spoon and continued creeping.
After three careful passes, dark streaks crossed the plank, the tin’s lid lay smudged, and Lily’s fingertips showed purple stains. The line of ink still leaked through the crack, unchanged.
Translation
