English Original
"This canvas edge slips."
Fraser pinched the strip between his thumbs and forefingers. He pulled, and the canvas began to stretch, its weave humming with tautness. Lucia steadied the half-built cradle on the low bench; the curved runners flexed a little under her palm. A thin overlay of felt waited nearby, cut to size. She pressed one tack against a rail and let the point sink into the soft birch with a slow push. The tack snapped flush, yet the canvas still sagged in the middle, so the two of them shifted their grip and tried again. Sound from the yard seeped through the open door—gentle clinks of tins, distant laughter, and the dry rustle of sawdust along the floorboards.
Fraser tapped the next tack. The canvas rebounded like a quiet drumhead, then settled. “It bounces back every time,” he observed, keeping his voice level. They changed position, working side by side without hurry, and the material finally stayed flat. Even the old mallet resting beside them carried its own firm dignity, head bruised but steady. When Lucia smoothed the felt overlay, the cradle seemed to hold a whisper of dignity and respect among the scattered clamps and scraps. They stepped back together, shoulders brushing, and the small frame stood balanced, light catching the new surface.
Clouds thickened beyond the window. A sudden shower rattled on the tin roof, and cold drops splashed through a cracked gutter. Water streaked across the bench, darkening the fresh felt and peppering the canvas with spots that grew and merged until a shining skin covered the cradle.
Translation
