Story Content
English Original
Warm air thick with sardine sandwich aroma presses against Lilac inside the car, while a slate-grey thrush flutters onto the guardrail in the cooler draft beyond the window.
Cabin glass shows her blurred reflection, yet the bird’s bright eye glints outside, the two worlds divided by a narrow ribbon of rising asphalt.
Between her shoes, wrappers, ticket stubs, and a notebook jostle like tidbits saved too long, each bump of the switchback stirring them into new piles.
Lilac adds another layer, sliding a camphor leaf just gathered at the last bend into the notebook’s already bulging spine.
The car takes the next switchback; the engine dips a note, and the thrush shuffles along the guardrail with an awkward sidestep for balance.
Moist air cools her forearm, and condensation freckles the notebook cover faster than her sleeve can blot the droplets.
She wipes a clear oval on the glass, then lowers a crumb of bread to the sill, choosing to confide silent welcome to the bird.
The thrush hops closer, snatches the tidbit, and vanishes upslope in a scatter of loose cedar needles.
Fog thickens without warning at the next turn; headlights bounce back, and the road narrows to a pale stripe ten metres long.
Moisture beads faster, turning the cleared oval opaque, so she lowers the window for an unobstructed view despite the chill.
A cold gust sweeps across the clutter on her lap, lifting leaves, receipts, and wrappers so they flutter like tiny banners before settling against the door pocket.
She pauses, fingertips on the notebook spine, suddenly aware that the growing pile blurs more than it preserves.
One by one she removes duplicates—three machilus leaves, a faded ticket, an empty wrapper—and lays them on the damp stone parapet at the next bay.
The thrush reappears from the mist, not to beg, but to carry a leaf fragment into the cypress grove, returning twice until the parapet empties.
What began as a chance encounter now reads as housekeeping; her discarded layers suit a nest better than her notebook.
Only a single camphor leaf, veined like a small map, remains between her fingers.
She slips it onto the parapet, steps back, and closes the notebook slim enough to fit the seat pocket without bulging.
"Ready for the next stretch?" Niall calls from the driver’s seat without lifting his gaze from the grey strip ahead.
Lilac watches from the bay railing as the first cool updraft hovers, then lifts the camphor leaf.
Translation
