English Original
Kit’s left hand turned the pot handle inward with the folded towel before any thought caught up.
A heavy steel pot stood centered on the electric coil, its base steady, its surface a faint, glassy tremor. Between coil and pot, a perforated diffuser plate baffled the heat into a wider, slower spread across the metal. A wooden spoon rested across the rim like a bridge, intercepting foam before it rose to flirt with the lip. Harriet stood shoulder to shoulder with Kit at the stove, eyes on the pot while his fingers hovered near. Steam traced an almost invisible column, bending whenever a wrist passed through air and then straightening again.
Harriet lifted the lid with the dry towel and angled it, revealing pearl drops marching from the rim toward the center. They had gathered in four faint spokes, a small compass pressed into water’s breath on the metal underside. Kit’s wrist stalled mid-stir, the spoon hovering as the pot ticked at the bottom and murmured at the sides. He sprinkled orzo, and then peas tumbled in, while a lingering carrot sweetness drifted past his nose like warm hay. A floorboard upstairs clicked once, and the steam’s thin column bent and corrected, as if counting the step. Among the ovals, a star pasta drifted crosswise, a tiny wildcard sliding through the slow clockwise glide. Harriet tipped the lid to let one drop fall back, and the surface dimmed a heartbeat before the ripples knit.
The murmur gathered into a soft roll, the spoon reading resistance as thicker currents tugged against its flat edge. Kit’s palm scooped another handful of orzo, yet halfway to the pot his fingers closed and the grains returned to the bowl. He skimmed off a froth cap with the spoon’s back, then hunted the bay leaf and set it aside on a saucer. Harriet turned the lid in the light, and the droplet spokes slipped, crowding one quadrant while the opposite edge cleared. Her glance checked the burner, and only then did her thumb ease the knob until the coil’s glow softened a shade. Turned this way, the compass on the lid no longer pointed anywhere; it simply mapped which side ran hotter.
The roll steadied, the bubbles rose and broke in even intervals, and broth began to coat the spoon in a thin sheath. Harriet lifted a spoonful clear, held it near Kit’s chin, and said, “Here,” the steam drifting sideways past his cheek. He tasted from the edge, pressed his lips together, and set the star he had fished onto the saucer beside the leaf. The kitchen’s noise thinned; upstairs settled into quiet; the coil hummed low while a single drip returned from the rim. Where coins and letters once jostled, fewer shapes glided now, each turn showing more of the bottom’s clean circle. Kit drew one slower circle with the wooden spoon along the pot’s quiet center.
Translation
Kit
