“What moved just near the shed?” Stella shaded her eyes with one hand.

Morning light fell across the small yard. A blue barrel stood by the fence. Eve walked to it with slow steps. “I saw a tiny rustle,” Eve said softly. She wanted to look inside the barrel. It stood tall, and the rim reached her chin. She tried to stretch her arm over the rim. Her fingers met the dry wood near the rim. Eve stood on a flat stone for height.

The stone rocked, and her hand bumped the barrel. The barrel rolled a little and tapped a rake. The rake handle slid and nudged a tin bucket. Dry leaves spilled from the bucket onto the ground. Something small paused under the leaves, then curled tight. Stella crouched and moved to the other side. “Do you see it?” she said, keeping very still. Their neighbor, Bram, stood at the fence and watched. “Hello there,” he said, “I heard a tiny tap.”

A small hedgehog pushed its nose through the leaves. It sniffed once and climbed out from the pile. Stella stayed low and stepped away from the barrel. Eve stepped back and opened a clear path. The hedgehog trotted to the fence and slipped through. Stella set the bucket upright and steadied the rake.
