English Original

A neat row of flat, oval stones covered only the left half of the driftwood perch; the right half showed dark, damp ovals where earlier picks had sat. Evening light ran silver across the lake, and a blue-grey lane of glare trembled over the open water. Josie stood on a firm patch of wet sand, toes short of the tideline, while her parent sat on the driftwood, humming a soft, wistful tune. “One… two… three,” the voice counted on her last good throw, then paused as the stone plunged with a dull plonk. She tried again into the ripple zone, sidearm and low. Tak—then plonk. Another stone looked perfect, yet its first touch made it roll and vanish. The gravel under her shoes crunched as she shifted her stance, but the small chop kept breaking the angle. She weighed a thicker stone, then a thinner one, then tested a new grip, her forefinger sliding over a cool, smooth face.

The breeze faded without warning, and behind the reeds a glassy patch appeared—an easy-to-see nook of stillness held inside a pale framework of driftwood and reed stems. The calm pocket lay farther out, past the small waves, and her earlier power drove stones too steep. If she had kept aiming into the chop, the stones would have slapped once and sunk. Josie bent her knees lower, set her shoulder flatter, and tried an inspired slower release with more backspin. The first skip flashed in the glare, then three light taps reached the edge of the smooth area before the stone slid under. “Four,” her parent said, voice quiet and steady. She stepped a little nearer, where wet sand held her prints, and waited as tiny rings from a dragonfly’s touch spread and cleared. Another throw went truer—tak-tak-tak—rings linked across the calm pocket like pale coins on dark green. She lifted one last flat stone, thumb on its cool top, then chose not to spend it. Instead, she pressed the stone onto the driftwood beside the damp ovals and withdrew her hand.

Translation
