Story Content
English Original
The steering wheel was begrimed, though the blue car’s shell gleamed under the chasing lights. Marco slid into the moulded seat, one knee brushing the rubber ring that yielded like a firm sponge. Overhead, the pole traced small blue-white sparks across the ceiling mesh, and a clean ozone tang rode the bass beat to his nose. Along the padded barrier ran an ochre stripe that looked bright where the LEDs hit and dull where the corner curved away. Eli rolled past in a taxi-yellow car and lifted two fingers in a wave. “Sparks up there!” he said, eyes on the grid that crackled in quick bursts and then went quiet again.
Pedal down, the car surged; lifted, it eased; no middle lived between those two states. The wheel spun freely under his palms, the plastic warm and a little slick, not new-cut shiny but mellow, like something that had carried thousands of hands and kept their trace as softness rather than marks. Early in the season, the rubber still smelled green and the motors had that warm-metal scent that rose through the floor into his shoes. He kept one small principle in his grip: hold lightly, then add a fingertip more. Eli coasted near the center and called, “You’re circling,” with a small grin, and Marco answered with a nod while another gentle turn sent him back toward the same section of barrier.
Another small turn vanished into the spin. Another, the same. The car returned the movement as a neat circle that seemed to write itself on the polished floor without effort. A colored bulb near the gate flickered twice and then steadied; nothing in the arena changed for it. His fingers tightened once, then eased; sweat beaded, the rim rasped faintly against his skin, and the bass line went on. The next half-turn held. The rear wheels caught a new angle, the seat pressed into his back, and he shot clean toward open space. A soft bump met the padded rail, the rubber compressed and sprang, and both cars that touched him redirected with that cheerful jolt the body reads before the mind places it.
He eased the pedal and let the car creep, wrists loose on the dirty rim. Up close, the barrier’s stripe met the bumper with a muted kiss, and his knee found the same give as when he had climbed in, a seasoned softness that told of years without needing to show them. He watched Eli slide by, their poles sketching tiny lightning that wrote and unwrote itself faster than a blink. The wheel’s warmth faded as he loosened his grip and studied its glossed smoothness like a face he had never actually stopped to look at. Evaporation lifted the damp from his palms and left the rim dry.
Translation
