No street showed beyond the window; a fogbank pressed against the glass where outside shapes used to move.

Dryers loomed in stacked columns, round doors shining under flat white tubes, while a washer on the far end vibrated enough to nudge a forgotten coin against its neighbour. Hot lint left a faint sweetness on the tongue; detergent dust added a chalky edge when Hadley wetted her lip after counting change. Grant set their basket on the stainless table and glanced at the row. A buzzer blared and stopped. The parent with the paperback turned a page. Hadley pinched quarters from a cup, their rims cold, a metallic tang passing her mouth as she breathed through her teeth. The window kept its gray face. The floor gritted softly under her sneaker as she crossed to an open dryer with its round tempered glass waiting like a held breath.

Grant crouched and slid out the lint screen; warm air rose and tasted faintly of toasted cotton. A soft mat of fibers peeled away in one piece, light as felt and speckled with bright threads, a quiet jubilee caught by the mesh. He set the sheet aside in a neat square. “This one?” Hadley said, her voice low to fit the room’s hum. She steadied a stack of quarters that had begun to stagger in her palm, then fed one into the slot: click, swallow, nothing new. Another went in; the display stayed blank; the drum stayed still. She tapped the next coin against her thumbnail, then slid it home; the same acceptance, the same steady hush. Behind her, a washer across the aisle rose into spin, and the floor thrummed through her soles with the taste of metal still faint at the back of her tongue.

The last quarter slid home; the display blinked, and the drum rolled once into a slow, certain turn.

Warm exhaust lifted through the aisle with a mellow sweetness, and Hadley stepped away from the machine toward the fogged window that had swallowed the street. Where the gray had seemed solid a moment ago, beads thickened and linked, and a clear oval thinned inside them. A small palm print, left by someone else, held the center—five ovals, a round, and a narrow wrist-shape—its edges rimmed with trembling drops. She raised her own hand without touching and held it beside the mark; her breath left a fresh veil around both shapes, leaving a mild, briny taste near her teeth. The buzzers quieted. Along the window, the palm print glimmered inside a ring of beaded water.

Translation
