Story Content

English Original

Nessa slipped through the workshop door, the latch resting back as her shoulder crossed the threshold into paper-scented air.

The tall Jacquard cabinet rose beside the floor loom, its upper chain of stiff cards hanging in a quiet column above the
grooved ratchet.

Sunlight warmed one side of the wood, while the far edge kept a cool shade that lifted small goosebumps along her forearm.

On the windowsill, a strip of
moss clung between brick and glass; the ledge held no pigeon today, and the corner sat unusually still.

Margot checked the reading head and tilted a card toward Nessa with two fingers.

"Here," she said, her voice easy as a soft rag, and the card’s penciled number faced up.

Nessa set the first card against the head and gave the edge a small
nudge, then the hooks tapped like gentle rain across stiff paper.

Threads rose and settled, the shuttle slipped through the new shed, and the beater pressed the weft tight; on the cloth beam, nothing obvious changed.

She fed another card, then another, the rhythm swallowing them, the fabric taking line upon line with no sign yet on the beam.

Her fingertips cooled under a faint draft, a small
numbness collecting along the pads, so she paused and turned the next card toward the light.

Holes flashed like a simple constellation, bright dots where hooks would pass, and the solid squares felt smooth under her thumb.

She lowered it, hesitated, and checked the blueprint pinned beside the loom, where a curved line should begin its climb across this part of the image.

At the tray’s corner, a solitary empty bobbin stood a little
forlorn, a reminder of threads already used and rows already tucked into place.

She set the card in and eased the chain forward; the cabinet gave its dry snap, the shuttle flew, and the beater landed once.

The curve appeared.

A single dark stroke arced through the pale ground.

A second pick deepened it into the small eye of the woven bird on the wall plan.

Nessa’s hand hovered above the next card, the pad of her thumb lifting and lowering in a slow half-inch like a bobbing cork.

She compared cloth to paper without speaking, then leaned back, the cabinet’s warm side touching her sleeve while the shaded side cooled the back of her wrist.

Margot let the treadles rest, and the room settled around the new eye, the hooks quiet, the chain still, the familiar machine now holding a picture.

Beyond the glass, the ledge stayed empty, the
moss a small green line against brick, and the afternoon moved over the floorboards in patient rectangles.

Light slid along the fresh pattern until the window frame’s shadow reached it, a cool stripe meeting the bird’s eye and darkening that patch of cloth.

Translation
