English Original
‘This part is thinner—what changed?’ Greta crouched beside the tide pool and pointed at the pale salt rim. She rested on one knee, shoes braced on dry rock, and held her hand above the line without brushing it. A moment later she dipped a fingertip into the water; cool silk rose to her skin, and algae yielded slightly. Her other fingers waited on the stone, already wrinkled like a prune from earlier splashes along the shelf. Otto balanced beside her, his elbow on his thigh, and their shadows met in an oval across the basin’s surface. Inside the pool, an anemone drew its fringe in and then opened again as the faint ripple reached its tiny muscles.
From a ledge above, a punctual drip began to tick, each fall setting a cadence that crossed the pool’s thin skin. Otto intoned a low count that matched the drops, his voice even while outer waves broke and scattered the sound. Beyond the headland, short grass lay sunlit and bucolic, while down here the rock kept to salt, glare, and time. Greta slid her hand to the edge and barely brushed a knuckle along a ribbon of sea lettuce on the wall. Near the water it felt springy and fresh; above the pale line, its lifted part had dried into a crisp band. She traced that boundary in the air, then halted mid-gesture as glare raised a false bottom and shifted the picture.
The ticking ended without warning; the ledge gave no more drops, and the pool’s face smoothed into a bright, quiet plate. Greta lifted her open palm to cast a small shade, and the bottom sharpened while two ages of lettuce stood side by side. She held her forefinger along the chalky arc, measured its thinness against a knuckle’s width, and moved to a broader segment. Otto lowered his head but stayed silent; her damp palm settled on warm rock, and for a breath her posture did not change. Then she rose and brushed the dusting of salt from her knees, while he rocked back on his heels and stepped away.
A damp handprint cooled on the stone and narrowed at the edges as the warm rock slowly drank the water. Two oval knee marks darkened the ledge beside the pale ring, which ran thinner on one arc and wider on another. Beneath the marks, sea lettuce kept its green ribbon underwater while its brittle margin held against the chalk and did not bend.
