English Original
“The scale is clear.”
Linden lifted the box with both hands and set it on the blinking digital scale. Fluorescent tubes buzzed above, while a long shadow from the parcel drop-box crossed the tiles toward them. Glen shifted beside him, a number ticket in one hand, and touched the box's top seam. The seam sat a little proud, so Linden pressed along it and reached for the tape dispenser. Adhesive smell rose as the roll turned, and the serrated edge clicked while he guided a strip across. The strip skewed near the corner, and the scale display blinked again, waiting for weight to settle. They plodded a half-step along the counter, trying for better light, and the fluorescent glare edged the numbers. Glen breathed in, steadied the box with two fingers, and nodded at the uneven corner without a word.
A gust pushed through the doorway, and loose forms skittered off the form-filling desk in flashes. Pens on chains rattled against metal, and the parcel drop-box flap hit its frame with a quick clang. Linden chose to divert toward the flying papers, setting the box down and sliding a form back under the weight. Glen reached the far edge, caught two corners against the desk, and tucked a cap of correction fluid upright. The number-ticket machine beeped near the waiting area, and the overhead display lit two bright digits at once. Glen glanced down at his ticket, where the last number tore on the line and looked like 3 or 8. On their way back, the stamp case caught their eyes; one stamp showed a meadow under midday glare. Another showed rows of plants inside a quarantine greenhouse, lit from above by flat panels of light. They reached the scale again, and the screen had gone dark, then flashed awake into a bright waiting zero. The tape end had folded back onto itself, and the box seam now stood open by a finger's width.
Linden braced the corner against the side table's straight edge, then turned the dispenser and lifted the curled end. The metal teeth tugged it free with a soft snap, and he ran a new strip across the shadowed line. Glen angled his palm above the display, trimming the glare, while Linden smoothed the seam with steady passes. He pressed along the crease, crossed the strip at the corner, and checked that no gap showed under the light. The scale blinked once and settled, and the digits held still like chalk caught in a bright window. They lifted the box together and walked toward the counter windows, where stamps thudded in tidy presses behind glass. Linden breathed out, rolled the dispenser back to its place, and followed Glen's careful path between the floor lines. By the tape's cradle, a thin curl he had lifted earlier now lay half-lit at the lamp's edge.
