English Original

Lena tipped the ceramic dish and let a loose veil of sand hiss across the brass, her wrist rolling once, then a little more, until the scatter glimmered in the overhead light.

Two stools
flank the table, and a glass of water on the next bench shows a faint quiver at its surface; Jonas stands to officiate the demonstration with the rosined bow already in his hand, the hairs chalked pale where they have met the plate before.

He set the bow to the edge and drew a slow stroke, and a high, clean
strain lifted from the brass, its voice narrow at first and then steady; grains jumped in tiny arcs and slid as if waking, leaving brief trails that vanished as the next vibration folded over them.

Her fingers hovered at the rim, then touched and left, then touched again at a different spot, and the pattern reorganized in an instant, loops breaking into crosses while a
hush settled in the pause between bows and the whisper of sand kept working on the metal.

She added another pinch, a quick sprinkle from higher up so it fell wider, and then another, because the lines near the corner seemed faint and the corners seemed hungry for more, and the table carried the sound into the floor while the glass sent tiny rings to the lip.

Jonas lifted the bow and moved a hand’s width along the edge; “New note,” he said, and the next stroke slid brighter, the tone hardening at the flanks of the square, and the sand poured itself off the loud places and found the still paths, each line thinner than a shoelace and twice as crisp.

Lena reached again for the dish, then stopped with her thumb resting in the chalky rim, because the table leg by her knee didn’t wobble the way it had at first; a thin
balsa wedge sat under it, pared to a taper by someone else’s knife, an unnoticed sliver making the tabletop hold level while the tone drew.

She looked back to the plate and saw too many dots near the edges where she had been generous; the grains crowded the quiet lines and turned them cloudy, and her shoulder lifted and set as she weighed another handful over the dish and let it sink back with a dull pat against the ceramic.

Her palm brushed the border clean instead, one flat pass with the side of her hand sending the spill to the tabletop’s ghost outline, then a second pass that left only a fine dusting; the metal’s reflection sharpened, tight and precise, and the bow’s next stroke made the pattern lift out of the noise like thread pulled taut.

She kept her finger off the rim and stood a little to the left, so the light grazed the brass, and the lines that had read as decoration shifted into something like paths through still water, rigid where the grain would not cross and soft where a tremor lived between them.

“It's singing,” Jonas said, the bow’s hair creaking faintly as he sustained the note; the room answered with nothing but that sound and the grainy scrape that rode under it, and the glass steadied its rings until only a bright edge remained.

Lena tipped the dish again, this time closer to the centre and slower, the pinch small enough that each white grain landed with space around it and settled along the quiet seams.

Translation
