The Windlass and the Dented Lid at the Canal Lock -

Story Content
English Original
Clara dropped the windlass onto the square spindle before her eyes checked the fit, wrists already giving the first half-turn.
The balance beam jutted over dark water, its ash wood worn bright where many hands had pushed.
The chamber stones carried a faint tremor from the engine’s steady putter, a slow heartbeat under her soles.
Ahead, the canal’s skin held a mirror of pale clouds and one drifting feather, unbroken for a careful breath.
Moss ran a bright line along the lock walls, a year stacked upon years in velvety green.
Ropes rubbed the stone bollard with a dry creak, fibres tightening as the boat drifted inside the throat of the lock.
A heron rose from the towpath hedge, wings clapping once before it sailed to the far bank and stilled there.
Somewhere behind, the painted tin watering can rattled its loose lid whenever the engine pulsed under the deck.
“Level soon,” Otto called from the tiller, his voice carrying lightly over the putter and the faint bicycle bell on the towpath.
Bright paint on the gate beam shone except for one small imperfection, a pucker in the gloss where dust once settled.
She set the windlass square again and cranked; the ratchet answered with a shallow tick, then stalled against the paddle’s weight.
Clara paused mid-turn, knuckles whitening on the handle, chin lifting toward the moss band that showed the levels still disagreed.
Her hands changed course before thought, rocking the windlass back a fraction, then forward, the way a tight jar eases under patient turns.
Metal scraped, the square socket seated deeper, and water began to murmur through the sluice, low at first and then insisting.
Within the chamber, bright whorls split into tiny disks that spun like organelles in a classroom cross-section, each circling its own clear edge.
She kept the rhythm, breathing to the gear’s cadence, and laid her palm on the gate’s soaked timber to feel the push thinning.
When the yellow lichen stopped trembling and the ratchet clicked easier, the old silence gathered in the chamber like folded cloth.
Clara leaned her shoulder into the balance beam, and the gate swung on its iron, the groan dropping in pitch as the gap widened.
A final pulse from the engine rattled the watering can again; its lid hopped, skittered the length of the roof, and fell with a soft clang.
She stepped after the noise, then stopped, keeping the beam’s slow nudge until the leaves on the water floated straight.
Otto’s hand rose from the tiller in a small wave, and the bow edged through the opening while ripples unwound from the mossed stone.
By the chimney, the dented lid lay still beside the mug, and a pale brown ring dried on the enamel where the tea had cooled.
Translation
