English Original

Ripples threw quick silver shapes onto the stone rim of the small fountain.

Orson sat with Giselle, and his knees touched the cool edge through thin shorts.

A cold bottle in her bag left wet beads on the canvas, then on her hand.

When Giselle set the bottle down, a cold ring spread across the canvas.

A pigeon rested near them and pressed its toes to the damp rim.

He took out a delicate wax bird and set it on his palm.

He tried to perch it on the rim, just beside a pale coin under the water.

Heat from his palm reached the bird's belly and made the wax glossy.

Warmth rose from the sunlit stone and softened the feet, so the bird slumped.

Orson steadied it with one finger and gave a tiny flick under the tail.

He pinched both wings gently, and the edges printed faint lines on his nails.

Mist dotted their wrists with cold pins, and the water's hush filled the square.

A shiny thread of melt began to creep along the bird's back and neck.

They slid along the rim until a small, adequate patch of shade covered the stone.

Giselle touched the spot. "It is cooler here," she said, and she sat closer.

Under the cooler stone, the wax stiffened a little, and the tail lifted again.

He bent close and blew across it; his breath added warm air.

Then a bright patch crossed the rim, and the feet softened, and the bird leaned.

A thin smear of wax stayed on the warm edge where his thumb had pressed.

Orson kept one finger on the tail, and the tiny bird leaned.

Translation

Giselle

Orson

Orson

Story Discussion - Wax Bird at the Fountain

1

Ripples throwing quick silver shapes on the stone rim — visual detail that makes the water lively; cool edge under Orson's knees — tactile detail that shows temperature; cold beads from the bottle on the canvas and her hand — tactile and temperature detail; the wax becoming glossy from his palm's heat — visual and tactile showing warmth effect; mist dotting their wrists like cold pins — tactile and atmospheric.

2

Yes. The heat from Orson's palm made the wax glossy and softened the feet, causing the bird to slump; later warmth from the sunlit stone and his breath also softened parts of the wax.

3

They moved into the shade, so _______ , then _______ , and finally _______.

They moved into the shade, so the wax stiffened a little, then the tail lifted again, and finally his breath warmed it so the bird leaned.

4

She may have felt relief from the heat and wanted to be cooler — evidence: the cold bottle and wet beads, and her comment ‘It is cooler here.’ Another possibility is that she wanted to sit closer to Orson for company or comfort — evidence: she sits closer after touching the spot and speaks softly.

5

He kept his finger on the tail to steady the softened bird and prevent it from slumping or losing its shape as the wax softened; the text says he steadied it with one finger and gave tiny flicks and presses, showing careful control.
