Clara reached for a small jar of peppercorns, and the loose lid slipped. It spun off the glass and rolled fast, wobbling across the kitchen tiles. The cat sprang down and batted it; the lid clinked against a chair leg. Peppercorns tipped from the jar and began to scatter in neat, skipping arcs.
