Story Content
English Original
Kestrel slipped through the door and crossed the cool threshold into the small room. On the wooden shelf near the window stood her sealed glass terrarium, its outer wall marked by faint overlapping ovals where her palms had rested. She drew near until her breath clouded the curve, then laid one hand on the warm sunlit patch and the other on the shaded side. Her fingernail tapped above the soil line and returned a dull, closed note; the same nail found the headspace and brought back a higher ring. Two notes arrived in that order, and her shoulders dropped a fraction as the shelf steadied under her elbows.
A drip ticked somewhere inside, then another followed, the intervals closer together than before. She slipped her fingers under the base, lifted an inch, paused midair, and set it back as the ticks quickened against the glass. "It's ticking faster," Kestrel said, tilting her head so one ear hovered close to the curve. Condensation filmed the glass, and the plants blurred into a single green wash across the inner wall. She spread her palm on the curve until a round patch cleared, a small viewport rimmed with fog and tiny beads that merged and slid. Through it, a slender fern stalk pressed a frond to the wall; veins showed so finely that pale cytoplasm seemed pooled behind each rib.
She circled the shelf to the darker side, and a different green waited there—denser, cooler, compact along the moss cushions that tucked against gravel. The trailing fig kinked where the wall bent, its stem apparently broken by the curve yet whole beneath it, a line skewed by glass. From this angle, the interior looked cavernous, a pocket world stretched and deepened by the round pane, shadows pooling at the edges. She tapped again, lightly at first, mapping the anatomy of the jar by sound alone. A bright ring lived over air, a muted thud sat above earth, and a quick tick marked a droplet finishing its slide. Her fingers found the base, and weight pressed into her palms as she inched the jar a hand’s breadth to catch light; the shelf gave a soft clink. A sparrow landed on the outer sill, pecked once at the windowpane, and lifted away without consequence.
Her earlier map loosened when the light shifted across the curve, and she stood quite still with one hand resting there. The moss before her no longer matched the front’s richest cushion; it held another shade, a second garden arising from the same jar. She kept her palm against the glass, and warmth opened the viewport again, but slower now, a thin circle widening bead by bead as the fog receded. Her breath fell into the drip’s quick measure, and her shoulders eased by degrees she did not count. She raised her hand and let one fingernail touch the curve; the nail paused, then gave a gentler tap, and the high ring hung a little longer.
Translation
Vocabulary in Context
- viewport
“Her palm warmed the fogged wall until a small viewport widened, bead by bead, and the moss sharpened.”
- slender
“Through the cleared circle, a slender fern stem flattened its frond against the glass, every vein bright with moisture.”
- anatomy
“With three careful taps, she charted the jar’s anatomy: air chimed, soil thudded, and a droplet clicked.”
- cavernous
“From the shaded side, the round glass made the terrarium look cavernous, shadows pooling as if depth kept unfolding.”
- cytoplasm
“Light slanted through the pane, and pale cytoplasm seemed to gather behind each delicate rib of the pressed frond.”
