Story Content
English Original
A dark gull footprint dried on the rock beside the basin, its webbed edges speckled with sand and salt.
Inside the pale ring the tide left, a hairline scratch crossed the rim as if a pin had skimmed the stone.
Vance knelt, one knee on dry grit and one palm finding the rock’s stored warmth like a quiet foundation under the day.
A hermit crab worked along a ledge in his peripheral sight, its shell tapping an irregular beat that barely marked the water.
An anemone cinched shut when his shadow passed, then reopened into a soft hemisphere with tentacles swaying as if feeling a current that never formed.
Light came in slanted, and the pool seemed shallower than it was; refraction folded depth upward and scattered green overtones across the floor.
He leaned closer to read the line on the rim, but glare sheeted the surface and threw back a broken version of the sky.
Salt crust gleamed bright, the scratch nearly vanished, and tiny fish flicked sideways into darker notches the rock offered.
Vance held one hand above the water to shade it, then lowered the hand again when ripples from his breath smudged the image.
He sat back on his heels, rubbed grit from his knee, and turned aside to fix a sandal strap that had loosened on the walk.
The strap’s arc made a small crescent of shade, and the cool under it met his fingertips after the stone’s stored heat flushed his skin.
"It’s cooler in the shade," Vance said to no one in particular, and the iodine-and-seaweed smell lifted when a far wave slapped the shelf.
He turned the sandal in his hands, watched the shadow tighten and release across the buckle, and paused with the strap held open like a little awning.
The motion echoed on the pool’s skin when he raised his cap and let its brim cast a band of dusk over the rim.
Green settled, sky thinned, and the bright ring softened enough that the scratch sharpened into a line with wet edges on the salt.
Not a gouge at all—where the line reached a knob of crust, a periwinkle lifted and set its foot, and the seam advanced a grain’s width.
The earlier mark across the ring matched the very path it was taking now; the maker had written its passage in damp, then kept going.
A hermit crab, unconcerned, clicked past the scene, and the cap’s shade steadied while Vance held still with knees pressed into warm grit.
Far off, the wave’s slap carried bell-like overtones, and the pool kept the afternoon’s quintessence—salt, angled light, and a body of water that warmed above the sea.
He let the brim drift a little wider so the anemone nearby could open unhindered, its fringe reorganizing under the cooler band that crossed the surface.
He kept the brim steady, and warmth on his knees eased while the shaded stripe held straight across stone and water.
A faint mist reached the rock from a distant burst against the shelf, and tiny droplets cooled his forearms, then dried into faint sugar grains.
Vance lowered his cap and kept the small snail in a clean band of shade.
Translation
Vance
