English Original

Garner tipped the watering can, and the jet stiffened when his thumb narrowed the spout’s mouth.

The stream arched farther like a tiny thruster, its reach changing with the angle of his wrist.

Lenora stood beside him on the warm grass, her feet set parallel as the can tugged his shoulder.

"Here," she said, and her palm steadied the handle’s second loop without moving it from his grip.

Afternoon light angled across the row, and he shifted his stance until both arches carried the can evenly.

They faced a young tree with cloth wrapped low around its trunk and a circular groove cut at the dripline.

A thin board stood as a guardrail along the ring, its pale grain soft against last year’s darker soil.

Near the shed, woven baskets rested with soft tags, while a few bees worked the higher blossoms.

A shallow knot showed a tight whorl near a nail, pale against the greyed strip.

Garner bent his knees and aimed for the groove; the first pour vanished as the ground drank without rippling.

His weight found his back foot again, and the can’s lip rose a finger higher before settling.

Another tilt sent a steady ribbon along the ring, and again the soil held its same dull color.

Bees worked above them, and a cabinet across the lane thumped shut, yet nothing near his boots changed.

He let a second brief pour disappear, then raised the spout to watch for any shine along the edge.

He paused mid-pour, wrist hovering, then leaned forward so the stream met the inner edge of the board.

"It is open there," Lenora murmured, eyes on a small notch cut low in the ring’s rim.

He poured a third time, longer, keeping his balance by planting both heels and letting the can pull his arms.

The ring swallowed the ribbon again, the surface quiet, the board’s inside face shining without any running gloss.

Then, right beside the notch, a tight whorl stitched itself into the still surface.

The next trickle did not soak; it slid, and the notch seemed to lure it into a narrow spillway.

A bead ran along a shallow path toward another sapling’s ring, and the board read as a miniature canal.

A dark seam spread along the board joint as the tiny channel accepted the run without splashing.

Garner stepped after the bead, hips aligned over his feet, testing how far he could lean without tipping.

At the far ring the soil held the first arrivals, then released a faint run that circled the tree’s base.

Beyond them, the older trunks kept their soft carved names and weathered ribbons, while the youngest bark stayed clean.

"There it goes," he said, straightening, and his shoulders eased as the little current linked both rings.

Lenora’s fingertips skimmed a softened carving on an older trunk, then withdrew as though the bark held warm stored sun.

He steadied the can and tipped a thin stream into the second ring’s waiting groove.

Translation
