The Scratch on the Bench and the Halting Tune -

Story Content
English Original
A pale scratch ran along the varnish near the workbench edge, thin as thread and stopping at the lamp’s circle.
Kellan placed his palm on the bench beside it and felt the dip where the grain caught dust.
A stool stood under the window, while the space beside the bench stayed open and held a careful balance.
The lamp cast an amber pool that warmed the center and left the corners in a mild gray hush.
On the shelf above, a lighter rectangle marked where something square had kept the oak from darkening.
Niall leaned within the warm circle and turned the brass cylinder so the comb teeth faced the magnifying lens.
A shallow lagoon of oil lay in a bottle cap, reflecting the lamp as a wavering coin beside the screws.
A narrow drawer, their quiet repository for spare pins and felt washers, sat ajar with its clean cedar smell.
"It turns from here," Niall said, tapping the small key already set in the arbor.
Metal, resin, and cedar braided in the air, while daylight from the window thinned to a soft gray against the lamp.
Kellan’s fingers searched for purchase on the knurled knob, the ridges fine enough to tickle his skin.
He rotated the key a short arc, then paused when the spring firmed and the cylinder tugged the first tooth.
The note rang clear, and the next one followed, then he stopped mid-turn as the scratch caught his eye.
His hand hovered above the key, the metal warm on his thumb, the bench line steady under the lamp.
He slid the magnifier over the scratch and tipped it until the slant light sharpened faint hatch marks across the line.
They spaced like the comb’s teeth, notched by use, each interval matching a note on the drum when he set them side by side.
"That line again," Niall said, his voice low in the small room, eyes on the bright comb.
Near the wall, an empty peg outlined a dustless oval, and the second stool stayed leaned away from the bench.
He inched the drum closer, and its pinfield ran almost parallel to the etched guide before drifting away near the center.
Kellan returned his hand to the key and wound a fraction more, then let the mainspring carry the cylinder on its own.
As the torque eased, the beats seemed to elongate, each note drawing a longer edge of sound before letting go.
A tiny lapse broke the phrase near the end; the tune halted with one bright tooth still lifted.
From the street, a bicycle bell rang once and rolled away, and the lamp’s edge stayed firm on the brass.
He lifted his hand before another turn and let the silence sit for a breath between him and the bench.
He set the box beside the pale line, squared its walnut side to the scratch, and closed the lid.
