Story Content
English Original
The slow bend made a shallow shelf where Margot and Dorian stacked stones beside the cool, bright water.
All morning the bridge held its dark steel girders above them, a frame she had looked past between lifts and squints.
Gravel graded itself by size across the bar, small near the waterline and heavier slabs perched farther from the reach of the current.
Morning light glanced off wet faces, while dry ones kept a dusty veneer that powdered her fingertips.
A confetti of cottonwood fluff skimmed the eddy, catching on reeds and floating in little constellations over the gray surface.
Margot pressed her knees into the rounded pebbles and tested a flat slate in her palm for heft and balance.
She set it on a wider base, sighted along the column to plumb, and waited for the tiny wobble to settle.
Dorian turned a river egg in his hand as though weighing fruit, then placed it on her open slate with careful fingers.
The stack carried their load cleanly through each contact, its weight bearing straight where skin met stone and stone met stone.
Studying the column, Dorian said, "That one stayed quiet, like it found its seat."
Wind skated across the bend and put a faint shiver through the top stone, a syncopated tremor that did not match the river's steady hush.
Margot paused with another slab halfway lifted, her wrists reading the drag, then eased it back to her thighs instead of forcing the join.
Her thumb tried to mediate between the small egg and the slate, nudging at a perched edge until the contact found a broader footprint.
Gravel crackled under her sneakers as she shifted a single step, tiny chips ticking downhill into water that plinked under the bridge.
She said, "Here is steadier," and her shoulders lowered by a breath while the column held.
She glanced up, not to check for traffic, but because the rust on the girders had pooled into streaks the color of dried tea.
Rivets standing proud wore bright silver rings where rain had polished them, and darker fans reached out from each joint like pressed ferns.
The pattern repeated down their column too, pale arcs burnished into a top stone where many palms had rolled it to calm.
What had been only a scaffold in the sky now resembled balance lines drawn by weather, the same gravity handwriting she traced with finger and weight.
Dorian looked where she looked and pressed his index finger to a rivet's cousin on their stack, a tiny ridge warming in the sun.
She lifted a thin chip as counterweight, feather-light yet enough to widen the margin, and set it so its mass tucked into a shallow pocket.
The stones hushed again, every seam bearing, and the column rose one quiet width higher without a whisper of tilt.
Overhead, a drip from a flange hit the river in a syncopated line that faltered, then evened, as breeze passed and went still.
Margot left her palm on the topmost face, warm on one side and cold where shade from the bridge crossed her knuckles.
Translation
Vocabulary in Context
- mediate

“Her thumb mediated between egg and slate, easing the tilt until their contact widened.”
- syncopated
“A syncopated shiver ran through the top stone, off-beat against the river's hush.”
- confetti
