Story Content

English Original

Kay and Max turned along the bank where their feet already knew the crooked roots and the low willow that brushed jacket shoulders without warning.

The pond lay in its yearly trade, ice loosening from the shore, a dark ring widening while the center held a chalky circle that thinned by the minute.

Close to their toes, a stake leaned slightly, and a chain ran from its iron eye down into the water, each link carrying rust like cinnamon and soot.

Beside that chain, open water held a neat oval of space, an ordinary gap that Kay did not step across or toss a stone through.

The mud smelled of leaf tea and pennies, and the air held the wet hush of dripping.

Max set a squat titanium mug on the bank, then eased weight off the unstable patch with a shift that kept the rim level and tea from sloshing.

A connoisseur of textures could stand here and point with two fingers: grainy ice, slick water skin, furred moss, and the smooth scar where feet had polished soil.

Kay lifted a pebble for the center and paused mid-swing; the chain’s lower links shivered as trapped air rose under the ice and brushed them with invisible knuckles.

The pebble settled back into the dirty glove, and a finger went forward instead, pressing the ice edge, which flexed once and filmed the fingertip in bright cold.

The small press did not break it, but it drew a thread of water across the knuckle like a pencil line.

Kay placed three pebbles in a row along yesterday’s melt line, then four closer to present one, marking distance without numbers, leaving the oval by the chain untouched.

The stake’s wood showed a pale stripe under the bolt, a band of clean grain where metal had rubbed away stain; grooves ran down, matched link to link.

Those grooves did not announce purpose or history, yet they could evoke both, the way a soot mark above a lamp speaks by its height and spread.

No accolade waited for that patient rubbing, only the simple fact of surface changed by touch and water and time.

Max’s watch face flashed once, a hard glint crossing his wrist as he crouched to hear the thin trickle feeding the ring of open water.

A breeze collapsed for a moment, and the thawing sounds seemed louder; then the air moved again, and a reed brushed Kay’s knee with a wet whisk.

Kay shifted the line of pebbles, spacing them by thumb-widths, then stopped, eye caught by the faint shadow under the chain, darker just where the water deepened.

The dark band stood out against the lighter silt, and small bubbles climbed there, ticking like beads in a loosened necklace.

Kay flattened one palm on the stake’s sun-warmed side and set the other near the edge, skin cooling fast, counting drips that landed between the placed stones.

The chain hardly moved, yet the ring widened another finger’s breadth, and the clear water slid around that unfilled oval, touching nothing but itself.

Translation
