She placed a second pebble on the opposite edge. The rim worked like a seesaw; one side dipped as the other rose. Both stones wobbled, then held their spots. Rhea stood within reach, her sleeve brushed Cleo's arm as the dock shifted gently.

She tried a tiny shell on the lid of a glass jar. The lid tipped, the shell slid, and her palm closed around it. Behind them, a tied rowboat turned slowly in its slip, with no clear destination today. Cleo set the shell aside and chose a third small stone. She eased it near the first two so the three formed a loose arc. The cluster teetered and threatened a tumble. The pail leaned farther, and the waterline climbed the low wall.
