Story Content
English Original
Two soft tones sounded as Yolanda and Dina stepped through the glass door, shoes dampening the dark mat at the threshold.
Yolanda, steering her steps around a bound bundle of newspapers, stopped at the chilled cases where a moth clung to the sliding pane.
The cooler glass mirrored the ceiling's even stripes, and the small body read as a fleck pasted into the bright grid.
Beyond the glass front, streetlamps still glowed pale against the growing blue, while the aisles held their steady, shadowless brightness.
Behind her, Dina set a wrapped warm item inside the microwave and pressed start; the numbers began to fall, yet the film stayed flat.
Paddles in the frozen drink drums turned a slow, even circle that seemed to keep ice and syrup near some easy equilibrium.
Beyond the counter, the locked display's glass caught a striped flash and sent it back unchanged.
The ceiling speaker skimmed a low melody across the shelves, a hush that barely seemed to change the air.
Yolanda reached for the cooler handle, then paused with her palm resting on the metal rail and her chin just above the pane.
She slid the door a hand's width, letting cold sink across her wrists, careful not to stir the air more than necessary.
The moth did not travel with the moving glass; it remained steady on the fixed pane that her fingers were not moving.
Her grip shifted; she kept opening slowly until a clear bottle tipped forward, its sides wetting and leaving a round print on the shelf.
The microwave worked on behind the clear door; seconds slid down, and the package inside still looked like a quiet rectangle.
A first chime ended the cycle, another set of numbers appeared, and again the plastic showed nothing but even sheen.
At the warming cabinet, damp air pooled gently above the glass while the coffee machine sent up a thin lifting thread.
Condensation had gathered along the cooler's bottom seal where warmer aisle air met cold glass, dotting the rubber with fine clear beads.
The film arched high, then split a vent cleanly inside with a quick click.
White vapour unwound in the chamber, erased the rectangle's edges, and left beads along the clear lid.
Dina opened the door with the utmost care and lifted the hot parcel onto the counter's smooth space.
At the till, coins chimed against the counter while the receipt slid out and a small plastic bag opened under steady hands.
The bottle and the warm parcel went in together, their temperatures pressing through the film and finding a passing equilibrium inside Yolanda's grip.
On the way out, the paired tones sounded again, and the moth still held its place on the pane that had never moved.
Dina stood beside her at the cases, the bag tugging gently at Yolanda's fingers with its small, uneven weight.
Yolanda leaned close to the glass and raised her free hand, holding it steady beside the moth.
Translation
Dina
