English Original
Theo stood with Ursa at the quiet corner of the pottery room.
Fired cups and bowls waited along a long plank shelf near the window. Cool air touched their hands, and slow dust turned in the pale light. A small tin for refuse sat under the shelf with tiny dry flecks. Theo placed a light cup on his palm and kept his other hand steady. He tapped the rim with a thin stick and held his breath to listen. A thin ring rose, clean and quick, then faded back into the room. Ursa rolled a taller jar closer and rested her fingers near its base.
Theo tried a wide bowl next and felt its weight press into his wrists. He tapped it gently; the sound came short and low, almost a soft thud. He set the bowl in a soft-lined box and watched the fabric stop the sound. A pale smear on the plank did not liquefy under a damp sponge. It stayed chalky and rough against the wood. Theo pointed to a tall vase with a narrow neck, and Ursa kept it steady. He tapped once, and a deep tone hung in the air as his fingertips buzzed. Then a second, tiny chime came from the windowsill beside a brass sextant. Its little frame trembled on the folded notes, and a bright tick met the tone. Theo's eyes widened; he smiled, and his shoulders lifted with a quick breath. He tried one more light tap and waited for the ring to fade. He aligned the stick with the plank's edge.
Translation
