Story Content
English Original
Vita and Olwen set a soft clay tile on a canvas mat by the open door. Sun warmed the threshold, while cool damp air met the earthy smell of wet clay. A small foam leaf sat on a wooden block, held snug with an elastic band. Vita ran a wooden rib over the tile to smooth the surface, then tapped the mat so the tile settled flat.
The band rolled loose and dropped, and it spun under a low shelf. Vita went down on her knees and crawled in, her sleeve brushing dust, and she brought the band back in her fist. They made a rehearsal press on a spare slab. Vita lowered the block and pushed, but the block had little purchase on the slick clay, so it slipped and left a faint slide mark. Her shoulders drew tight. She wiped the tile with a dry corner of cloth and set it back on the rough canvas. Her grin looked optimistic as she set the block again with both palms open.
This time she pressed straight down, held still, and counted under her breath. Then she lifted the block. A crisp leaf shape lay in the clay, and a fine line ran around it where the elastic had touched, like tiny loops marching along the edge. Vita glanced at the block and then at the line, and a soft laugh puffed from her. Olwen steadied the cork sheet, and Vita slid the rehearsal tile aside. She pressed the next tile straight down and lifted it cleanly.
Translation
