The first bubble slid free, and more followed his slow breath down the lane. A gap opened in the crowd, and he saw an opportunity for a bigger one. Remy stayed close, his hand steady on the cloth bag by his side. He kept the ring balanced and watched a thin film shine across it.

Near the next stall, a brass scale hung between two posts under a canvas awning. The seller set a weight, and the pointer balanced, thin and still over the mark. He poured dried figs onto a ceramic plate, and their soft bumps clicked against each other. A faint metal tap rose each time a weight touched the pan. A small breeze pushed along the lane and carried Xander's largest bubble sideways. It floated toward the scale and rested on the pointer for half a second. He held his shoulders balanced and blew long, even air through the loop. The lane opened again, and a wide bubble drifted past a stack of lemons. The next bubble rose above the awning and broke in the bright air.
