English 원문
Low morning clouds clung to the hills when Nora left the last streetlight behind. A battered canvas pack pressed between her shoulders, the weight of two metal canteens knocking softly together. Mud from last night’s rain pulled at her boots, slowing each step along the disused logging trail. Birds shifted in the underbrush, then quieted again, as if guarding her solitude. Soon the faint hush of running water filtered through the trees, and a narrow plank bridge appeared. Blue Finch Creek flowed beneath it, slow after summer, the surface reflective enough to catch pieces of white sky between overhanging leaves. The steady rhythm contrasted with yesterday’s crowded office, whose ringing phones now felt like part of a different season.
Nora crossed, searched for a shaded branch, and raised the first canteen to hang it where passing hikers could reach. The branch resisted, then snapped. The metal container thudded on the bridge rail, rolled once, and splashed. Cold spray jumped onto her face. She lunged, wrist-deep in the stream, fingers scraping moss before closing on the handle. As she dragged the dripping canteen back, current tugged at her sleeve and scattered brown needles downstream. The noise startled a kingfisher from an alder root; blue wings darted over the water and vanished. Wet and breathing hard, she steadied the second canteen against the intact rail, determined that at least one would stay.
When she knelt to check the dented lid, a wood box tucked under the bridge’s far beam caught her eye. She slid it into daylight. Inside lay six clear glass bottles brimming with filtered water, their caps sealed in silver. A folded card sat on top. Its front showed one printed word—"ALTRUIST"—and below it the line "FOR ANYONE THIRSTY." The discovery pushed a quick laugh from her throat; the creek already had a silent guardian, and she had nearly floated her own gift away. She placed both canteens beside the box. The extra supply would quench more than a few dusty wanderers when midday heat pressed on the valley. Beside the box, water from the rescued canteen glimmered across smooth stones.
