English 원문
From the wooden footbridge, Eve watched a lone heron lift its feet through the silvered mud, its shadow stretching across ripples left by the night tide. She knew every channel and sandbar out there; only yesterday’s map lived in her memory. Seldom had the flat looked so wide. Yet one familiar marker was gone: the tall post where crab nets once dangled stood missing, the gap as stark as a tooth pulled from a grin. A gull announced the retreating water with a hoarse call, and cold air skimmed the back of Eve’s neck like a damp cloth.
Air warming around her cheeks, she stepped down the slatted ramp. Each pace pressed heat into her boots while chill leaked upward through the mud. Faded streamers from last summer’s fete clung to a drifted plank, fluttering without energy. Beside them, a dented measuring cup lay half-buried, the handle green with salt. She nudged it free, tipped it, and brown water poured out in a thin ribbon. Nowhere along the usual row of stones could she find the fire ring where neighbours once smoked salmon at dusk; only a faint circle of darker mud hinted at its place.
What stopped her was the glint of fish scale caught in a crease of silt. She crouched, and the afternoon sun coaxed a blush of warmth across her knuckles. When her fingers brushed the speck, she stumbled upon more—dozens of translucent flakes, tiny mirrors set into the earth. They formed a loose path toward the missing post, as though the sea had sifted memories into view while sweeping structures away. If the water were any higher, the trail would vanish beneath chill waves again, leaving no sign except the warming air that now fluttered above the surface like soft steam.
Eve followed the shining fragments until the mud deepened, then she straightened, pocketing one fragile scale. She rinsed the measuring cup in a shallow pool and placed it upright on the last visible stone, a small, silent marker for whatever gathering might come next. Turning back, she reached the footbridge as the heron lifted, wings drawing slow arcs. A second cry cut through the warm hush, rolling over sand and water alike.
