A stray acorn, carried by some bird, lay wedged between two planks; he flicked it into the tide. Nearby, gulls swooped to feed on crumbs drifting from a fishing boat. Dean stepped over a coil of line and tapped the hot ring. “Feels warmer than yesterday,” he said.

As the sun climbed, color on the brass evolved from dull brown to bright gold, and the metal grew almost too hot to grip. Marco lifted the pin; its shaft met the ring with a faint hiss where thin moisture turned to steam. The sudden sound startled both men, yet the task stayed the same, only slower. Marco wrapped a damp rag around the pin, cooling it enough to slide fully through. Dean lowered a bucket, lifted cold harbor water, and poured a thin stream across the joint. Tiny droplets danced, then vanished.

They returned to the final ring before noon. Marco steadied the warm metal while Dean pressed the chilled pin home with a light tap from a wooden mallet. Two fresh fingerprints, one from each of them, blurred across the brass in a pale stripe of condensed water. Dean set the bucket beside the post, and the tide kept slapping against the pilings.
