Tatiana stood beside the tub. She dipped a wooden paddle and pressed a thick shirt into the hot water. Steam curled around her fingers and slipped along the ceiling. On the folding table nearby, Linden stacked a row of fuzzy towels that had dried earlier in the morning. Cool tiles touched Linden’s bare feet while the air around the basin stayed almost muggy. Farther back, a brown jacket—once worn by a hotel manager—waited for its turn in a wicker basket.

Two rhythms filled the small room. The towels landed with quiet pats, growing into a neat block, while sudsy water slapped the enamel walls of the tub each time Tatiana lifted the paddle. Neither rhythm bothered the other until a heavier burst of steam pushed upward. Heat gathered under the hanging line, made the cotton sheet swell, and the rope let out a soft groan. The sheet began to sway. Its lower edge brushed the tower of towels, nudged the top one, and sent it sliding. Linden lunged, knees bending to keep balance, but the towel still flipped onto the tiles. A bright green pattern on the fallen shirt beside it looked like a tiny jungle, now dotted with drops of cooling water.

Tatiana placed the paddle across the rim and wiped her arms on her apron. Linden returned the towel to the pile, a darker patch marking the corner where steam had kissed it. The sheet above continued its slow dance, and bubbles broke one by one in the basin below.
